Bring back Schoolhouse Rock!

In 1787 I'm told
Our founding fathers did agree
To write a list of principles
For keepin' people free.

Apparently it's needed.

This article is from the San Francisco Examiner, July 4, 1999. Here's an excerpt:

Edgar, a 19-year-old from Antioch and a graduate of Pittsburg High School who declined to give his last name, said he knew we celebrate the Fourth because it's Independence Day. But the country we were fighting with? “That I don't (know),” he said. “I want to say Korea. I'm tripping.” Asked how long ago it might have been, Edgar took a guess. “Like 50 years,” he said.

  1. Basic cluefulness
I thought this quote, from a high school history teacher, no less, was revealing:
“The kids have inherited a world full of violence and hypocrisy and unethical public leaders, certainly materialism and individualism. Some just give up on caring and trying. Something has to be done to win their affections back.
Gee, and here I thought the desire to not look like a complete moron was reason enough to know the basic history of ones’ country. I mean, I’ve never been exactly thrilled by our world of violence, hypocrisy, unethical public leaders, and materialism (and what exactly is individualism doing in that list of bad shit?), but I’ve never considered that reason to be an idiot. ARGH!

  2. Time for Timer!
Hey Jen, what about “Time for Timer”? Do you remember him?
    “I hanker for a hunka cheese!” :D
Hehehe :D I loved that guy. Sunshine on a stick too… those were fun to make. And the wagon wheels…
I’m hungry now. You’re lucky Rob makes you sandwiches!!!!
I know this has NOTHING to do with the horrendous education our kids receive nowadays. But that’s a subject I’m far too familiar with. Dave Barry wrote an article this weekend that sort of spelled it all out. Ahem.
