Game maker apologizes to Haitians

Here is a LTE sent in response:

Mr Diaz,

I would like to comment on your article “Game maker apologizes to Haitians”.
In it, Mr. Nelson states “A video game is something you buy to please the
kids. When there are so many other good messages they can put in a video
game, why does it have to be about killing?”. I would like to suggest Mr.
Nelson do quite a bit more research before spouting off. The number one
consumer of video games is ages 18-34, far from something intended for
pleasing kids. He also says “My concern is that Haitian parents already
got their kids a gift like this”. If so, those parents should immediately
drop their children off at CPS and leave them there. It is quite plain on
the Vice City package that the rating is “M”, intended for 17 and up only.

Mr. Fabian's request for a boycott had the exact *opposite* effect on me. I
am one of the few gamers without a copy of this game, and I immediately
purchased it before the censorship kicked in. I know some other people that
are doing exactly the same. If anything, the reaction to this game is
putting Haitians in a much worse light than anything this game could say or
do.

  1. Has Rockstar apologized to the Colombians, Cubans, Sicilians and Disaffected White Boys also negatively portrayed (and frequently killed) in Vice City? What about the ditzy blondes, goths, cops, rollerskaters, bums, prostitutes, or corrupt politicians? How DARE Rockstar engage in equal-opportunity sterotype bashing! How DARE they!
I think I’m gonna play some Vice City tonight. Oh yes.

  2. I have GTA 3 and vice city. I love them both. Yes, they make fun of everyone, but the point is they dont single out one group. They are just making fun and being stupid. Its not meant in seriousness and the game is damn entertaining.
