Houston School Board Moves to Adopt New Student Promotion Plan

City schools are dropping a policy that required city high school students to pass such core courses as English and math before they moved to the next grade.

The board of the Houston Independent School District on Thursday gave preliminary approval to a new promotion policy that school officials hope will keep struggling students from getting discouraged and help cut the district's dropout rate.

I… have no words.

That’s pathetic. It is the next closest equivalent to telling the kids they are too stupid to learn and therefore not worth the effort of teaching. The Houston School District has so many problems, but so do countless (unfortunately) others. Giving up on children and their potential should NEVER be an option or allowed. That is systematic neglect.
I taught summer school in Houston in 2002. For the kids’ “fruit and vegetables” portion of their meal, they were regularly given lollipops (i.e. “grape”) or pickles. Also, my students would find bugs, large bugs in their food, I would insist they bring them back and get new portions, they would bring them back to the cafeteria, the women would tell them all the portions were infected. The kids would eat them out of hunger. True story.
