Old dogs and time

My doggy is getting old. We got him in the summer of 2001 and he was maybe a year and a half to two years old. His sight and possibly his hearing are fading, he’s getting sway-backed, his ridiculous tail won’t curl up any more, and both back legs shake almost constantly, often giving out underneath him.

But he still frequently play bows at us and bounces at us (even though his back end goes sideways sometimes) and he still eats like a horse. He comes upstairs with us at night, though he climbs the stairs very hesitantly. He acts like he wants to jump on the bed, but there’s no way I can allow that – even if he could jump up on the bed, there’s no way he could safely jump down.

It’s just a matter of time, but hopefully he’ll be here with us a while longer yet.

And just because, here’s a pic of our next oldest pet Max. He’s pushing 12 now.

My photoshops! Let me show you them.

I’m taking two classes this term, Digital Imaging I, and Texas State and Local Government. TX Gov is required by the state for any degree, so I’m stuck with it. Texas government is… peculiar. My other class, however, is just plain fun. My major is history, but I’m thinking of also getting a “photographic artist” certificate, whatever that is. The classes for that are some photography fundamentals, digital imaging classes, a class on web design and small business management. Could be useful, and should be fun and interesting.

So! My photoshops, let me show you them! Click on the “thumbnails”1 for a bigger image.

But it's real!

I’m at school in the commons, and I’m reading the paper – an actual newspaper – that someone left behind. It seems the Catholic Diocese of Dallas has suggested to its parishioners that they should stay home from mass if they feel sick – good advice, of course. But then it goes on:

The diocese also posted on its Web site a letter from Bishop Kevin Farrell, who said he has encouraged priests to consider suspending the use of wine during communion, because it’s offered from a common cup. Farrell also said he has asked the priests to be sure that all Eucharistic ministers use “proper hygiene” when distributing the bread or host during communion.

Really? I mean, sure that sounds like good advice, but I thought that the whole point of communion was that transubstantiation magically miraculously changed the wine into the actual blood of Christ. Surely such a miracle could neutralize a few Swine Flu viruses, could it not?

Dorks

So sqlrob got a new laptop, an HP that was on sale at Costco:

sqlrob: What’s its name?
jenbooks: Happy!
sqlrob: Happy?
jenbooks: only thing I could think of with an H and a P….
jenbooks: *is lame*
sqlrob: Lovecraft
jenbooks: doh!
jenbooks: probably not a good idea.
jenbooks: don’t want your code summoning anything Bad.
sqlrob: It’s Vista. Too late.
jenbooks: ROFL
jenbooks: I’m so blogging that.

And so I did. :D

Opinions solicited: Netbooks

Ping ernunnos and gizka (and anyone else with an opinion):

So my PPC Powerbook is about to be maybe orphaned by Apple and I’m thinking that a netbook would really be all I need for school. I like having the computer with me, but dang it really adds a lot of weight to my backpack.

I think I remember you guys talking about getting netbooks at one point – how do you like them, and do you have any recommendations or warnings?

Hot Damn.

Remember way back in the election frenzy that meme going around about donating to Planned Parenthood in Sarah Palin’s name?

I just got a letter from Planned Parenthood today:

In response to the anonymous email message circulated back in September during the presidential campaign, urging people to donate to Planned Parenthood in honor of Gov. Sarah Palin, Planned Parenthood (nationally) has received about $1 million from 40,000 donors. Locally we received over 275 gifts totaling close to $5000! Thank you so much for supporting Planned Parenthood!

Fuck yeah.

Yay for cabs!

My Friday night, in bullet points:
