DNA Study Finds Chihuahuas Aren't Dogs “It was a surprise to find that some breeds such as the Ibizan hound and the Pharaoh hound, along with several others that dog aficionados have long believed dated back thousands of years, are actually much more modern animals ? re-creations that were probably produced by breeders,” said geneticist Leonid Kruglyak, who helped conduct the research. “However, it was more of a surprise to find that some breeds are not even dogs.” Among other findings, the analysis determined that the Chihuahua is actually a type of large rodent, selectively bred for centuries to resemble…

Nap time!
We had a fun day today. First, off to the Half-Price tent sale, where we ran into several of 's co-workers. We probably spent close to two hours there, poring over all the books. We managed to come home with 49 books – I spent about $18 and he spent about $15. We both found a couple of books we'd been looking for, so it was definitely a Good Thing™! And, because I'm a complete and utter geek, here's what we scored: Rob's take Computers And Intractability Programming Perl lex & yacc Managing Projects With Make JavaScript The Definitive Guide…

Reading…
I just started reading Georgiana : Duchess of Devonshire. I discovered through a web search that the subject of a painting I have is the Duchess of Devonshire, who lived in the late 1700's. It's a chalk drawing that is supposedly over 100 years old. My parents liked this drawing, because they thought it looked a bit like my mother. Anyway, I like it too. I don't know for sure how authentic it is – one of these days I'd like to find out, but I'm not sure how.

chickenshit
Posting in a community, whining about how “creeped out” one is by members of another (somewhat related) community (that, incidentally, one was banned from), and then deleting dissenting comments from that community entry. Bah. Silly LJ Dramaqueens. Deleting comments in a post in one's own journal is one thing; in a post in a community journal is quite another.

Stinky
Ugh. The neighbors on the corner have been using coffee grounds as fertilizer on their lawn. Dunno if/how well it works, but I sure hope my next door neighbors don't copy this idea.

Books!
Last night was fun. I went to a book club meeting with real people! A woman that works with goes to a book club once a month and I got to go last night as a guest. It was fun, getting out of the house and talking to people who actually have a few brain cells. The book for this month (that I did get a chance to read, even!) was Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight : An African Childhood by Alexandra Fuller. Wow, this was a really good book! It's the author's memories of growing up in…

Unconnected statements
I love La Femme Nikita. An ex-boyfriend turned me on to the series when I moved to Dallas. I think it was during the second season. I've got the first season on DVD, and it's completely yummy. Can't wait to pick up the second season. I'm not sure if/when it jumped the shark, but I'm pretty sure it was solid at least for three seasons. I've also got the movie on DVD – it's pretty dang good too. “Children who know how to think for themselves spoil the harmony of the collective society which is coming where everyone is interdependent.”…
