Last night was the book signing for Oryx & Crake by Margaret Atwood. I can't believe I almost missed it! I'd forgotten that it was Wednesday until Rob called and asked if I was on my way. Margaret Atwood was warm and funny with a very dry sense of humor. I enjoyed it immensely. I was able to get both books, The Handmaid's Tale and Oryx & Crake autographed.
I was amused (and not surprised) by the very first question: “Taking into account the current state of world events, do you believe The Handmaid's Tale could happen?” Atwood said that she did not subscribe to the theory “It can't happen here” and that nothing in her novels had not taken place in the past, or was not possible given current technology. She also said that a lot of the Handmaid's Tale was based on US history.
Another question was “Why do you write about bad relationships between mothers and daughters?” Atwood's response: “Why do you enjoy reading about them?”
She's a very cool lady.

She’s so cool . . . I like how she answered the questions. :)
I’m so jealous! I love Margaret Atwood’s books! You’re so lucky!
I think about “The Handmaid’s Tale” a lot, and do believe it could happen someday, if we let it.

And what did the questioner have to say in response?
