My Palm Tungsten E is not holding a charge very well at all. I got it (near as I can figure – thanks LJ for remembering what I don't!) back in December '04. (I also discovered that I got my glasses in January 04 as well – sheesh. Guess I do need new glasses)
But anyway – it'll cost $130 to get the battery replaced, plus I won't have it for however long it takes to get it back. This is stinky. So since I've already been saving up for a Shiny-as-yet-undetermined, maybe I should get a new PDA.
What do y'all have and/or recommend? I've been sorta eyeing the Palm LifeDrive, but I don't know if I need that much PDA. It sure is shiny though. I don't want a phone/pda combo thingy though (like the crack blackberry) as the service is way more than I want to pay for.
You are mac-based like me right? So it’s gotta be something that runs on the mac operating system?
Yes’m! I (heart) my mac and I’m never going back. :)
I still love the Sony Clie, but they don’t make ’em for America any more, and it’s a crapshoot to sync it to a Mac without extra software.
Would be interested to know what you get, particularly if it’s Mac-compatible, as I’ll be in the market for one soon, very much with the specs you describe.
I don’t mind extra software, as long as it works. ;)
The Palm LifeDrive does say it’s OSX compatible – though the site only says 10.2 – 10.3. I’m fairly sure that 10.4 would be fine, but I figured I should look around to be sure I really do want that many bells and whistles.
I’ll definitely post when I figure it out!
I have a LifeDrive, having just recently switched up from a Tungsten E, in fact. I love it SO FREAKING HARD. It’s fast, slick, and I love the photo capabilities. Bluetooth rocks my universe and is near-seamless with my PowerBook. The HD capabilities are great for school, and the wireless internet capabilities are AWESOME. I can check email from anyplace in Jonesboro with a wireless network now.
I totally say go for it.
By the way, I thought of all my fellow Apple junkies last night when we watched Tuesday’s Eureka episode. The town got a virus in its wireless intranet, and when Allison relayed this to Sheriff Carter, he said “You guys should’ve switched to Macs.” The way this show has been, I would so not be surprised to see them all using Macs in an episode soon, and not mention it at all. Just to see if we notice.
Heh – thou temptest me. Or something like that. Hmmm. ::: thinking :::
* chants * Get it! Get it! Get it! * chants *
You can never have too much PDA.
Question for ya Miss Hillary! OK, so you can web/get email wirelessly. Is there some sort of subscription or something you have to purchase, or can you get connectivity assuming the wireless network is open or you have access to it?
If the wireless network is open, you’re good to go. In my case this means I hit our shopping mall pretty often; the wireless network is free & open. Also ASU has wireless, and all you have to do is register the MAC addy of the device, which I’ve done, so that means I get wireless for free at school, too.
Oh good, thank you. I thought (hoped) that was the case, but the thing I was reading in the store (about the Palm TX, my other possibility) was saying something about data plan or somesuch.
Thanks much! :)
Oh, another question! What’s your OSX version these days? 10.4.something yes? And the lifedrive/software is all happy and stuff? :)
10.4.7, and the software & LifeDrive are perfectly happy with it. Bluetooth rocks my entire universe, since I HATE cords. Nice to be able to sync without it. The one SINGLE complaint I have is not on the part of Apple or Palm–it’s Google. I want Google to make gCalendar syncable with iCal so I can then sync my gCal, iCal, and LifeDrive (ldCal? ^_^) all with each other.
I hear ya on the google thing. Although, I’m starting to be Not Happy w/ gmail. It’s a paranoia thing. <grin>
I use SOHO Notes rather than the palm desktop, also I’ve got some older palm apps that I Cannot Live Without. Besides that, I’ve got SmartList To Go, which I can’t really live without either, though it’s difficult to manage on the mac. I think everything will be ok, but I’m not sure. Also, I’m starting to lean toward the TX – the LifeDrive, while very shiny and drool-worthy really is more than I need or even want. Hrm. Still Thinking. :)
Thanks much for your feedback!!!
I will be honest: shiny & droolworthy though it is, I have done nothing thus far on the LifeDrive that I could not have also done on the TX. I believe the TX also has wireless capabilities via open network, so there’s that. Unless I decide to start carting around Powerpoint presentations and papers on my LD, I’d have been just as fine with a TX. If I’d been buying it myself I’d likely have the TX, but since Walter bought it, it’s whatever’s top of the line. ^_^ Walter’s that way about gadgets.
I dig that babykins!! (er, sorry. no idea where THAT came from)
With class and stuff, it’d be useful for you, right? Unless you drag your mac around (I would!)
But yah. Considering my Tungsten E is 32MB/28MB avail, I really think I’ll be perfectly happy with the 128MB/100MB avail TX. ;) It’s got the neatokeen wireless, so I’m good.
WHEEE! I made a decision! One that’s gonna cost me $100 less than I thought. I am gonna get that bag I found the other day! :: insert evil laugh here ::
And yes, never look a gift Shiny in the mouth, I always say. I get strange looks, too. o_O
